Brackley, UK – 19 May 2008: DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR PEREZ (T-Sport)

T-Sport’s Sergio Perez stamped his mark on the British F3 International Series title this weekend with two dominant victories at Monza in Italy. The Mexican driver had times disallowed from both qualifying sessions and consequently had to start each race from 14th place on the grid, which illustrates how amazing his performance was this weekend.

“It was fantastic,” said Sergio after the second race. “Everything went well in both races after such a disappointment with the qualifying results. It was perfect; we made no mistakes. It’s difficult to go from 14th to first when everyone around you is crashing a lot so I just concentrated on finishing; I wasn’t thinking about winning. My straight line speed was very good. Honda did a perfect job, and so did my team. I’ve been to Monza four times and always won here so it’s my favourite circuit now!”

“I haven’t seen an F3 race like this in years,” said T-Sport Team Principal, Russell Eacott. “To win from that far down the grid, twice, in changing conditions, at one of the best tracks in the world, is staggering stuff. I take my hat off to Skelly and the engineering department as all of their hard work behind the scenes is now paying off. Thanks also goes to Honda of course who have done a brilliant job for us and Sergio has come along and put it all together into a winning package. Sergio has a good lead in the Championship now so we’ll go into Rockingham looking to maintain this momentum.”

Salman Al Khalifa had a tough weekend which began at the airport when documentation problems delayed his arrival at Monza. This meant that he started the weekend on the back foot and had a rough time of his Italian weekend. The popular Bahraini will bounce back at Rockingham this weekend though as he goes to the Corby track full of confidence after his recent good showing in testing there.

This was Steven Guerrero’s first visit to Monza and, although the Colombian driver went well during the dry free practice session, he struggled for pace in the wet qualifying session. In race one he was tagged at the first corner which put him out of the race and in race two he took a tyre gamble, heading out on wets. Unfortunately the weather went the other way and with the track rapidly drying he could only manage a fourth place finish.

The next two rounds of the 2008 British F3 International Series take place this Bank Holiday weekend at Rockingham in Northamptonshire.
